[custom_adv] Astounding photos show nimble yogis in Bangkok, Thailand, deftly balancing a beer bottle on their heads, clutching it as they hold the plank position and holding it high above them during a sun salutation. [custom_adv] Perhaps predicting the temptation to overindulge, enthusiasts are advised to drink just one or two bottles during the one-hour session. [custom_adv] The movement, called 'Bieryoga', started in Berlin in 2015 and has spread to cities like Melbourne and Sydney. [custom_adv] Despite gushing that they are 'passionate about beer', Emily and Jhula insisted the craze was not all fun and games. [custom_adv] 'Beer Yoga is fun but it's no joke - we take the philosophies of yoga and pair it with the pleasure of beer-drinking to reach your highest level of consciousness,' the Bieryoga official site reads. [custom_adv] If you think yogis only drink green smoothies and coconut water, think again! Beer yoga is the new craze that combines two ancient arts—yoga and brewing beer—for one spectacular night out. [custom_adv] And now, after originating in the United States as a way to introduce beer lovers to yoga, this trend is making its way across the globe. [custom_adv] BierYoga’s founders say they first encountered this practice at Burning Man, an annual arts festival in the Nevada desert. But it’s no surprise that the trend really caught on in Germany, a place known for its world-class beer and serious appreciation for the brew. [custom_adv] A beer yoga class is sure to be full of fun and laughter—especially after the first drink—but the aim is not a frivolous one. Yoga is all about making a mind-body connection, and taste is just another way to stay present during the practice. As one of BierYoga’s founders, Jhula, explained, pairing the art of yoga with the pleasure of a delicious brew might just help you reach a higher level of consciousness. [custom_adv] It seems the rest of the world is beginning to catch on. The idea came to Emily and Jhula after seeing it done at Burning Man and they began teaching BierYoga classes in Germany in 2015. They have also travelled to Australia to teach and now, there are separate classes in Bangkok. [custom_adv] If you’re planning on getting drunk, you might have to wait until after the class is over. Generally, you only have one beer bottle to work with during your class and the bottle can even work as an extra weight to help you strengthen your poses, though beer yoga classes are really more for fun than any serious effort to get fit. [custom_adv] While BierYoga isn’t running any public beer yoga classes at the moment, you can contact them for a private lesson or try it out in Bangkok with Brew Yoga. While Jhula told Lonely Planet they are open to doing classes abroad, they “have no concrete plans to open a second base outside of Germany at the moment”. [custom_adv] Despite this, it appears the idea has taken on a life of its own so keep an eye on new beer yoga locations popping up near you. [custom_adv] With their smash-hit studio, BierYoga founders Emily and Jhula have taken beer yoga mainstream, and now it’s showing up in places as far away as Sydney, Australia. Beer-loving yogis across the globe are in luck, because this seems to be just the beginning for this unique trend.
