In 1890 there were 72 bathhouses inthe city, with different range of quality and cleanliness. These days only 31 public bathhouses have been identified as remaining. However, at around 1920 there were around 85 bathhouse keepers . Public bathhouses are an ancient tradition in this part of the world that in many areas still form part of people’s daily lives. As you enter the bath you first see the hot water area, decorated with 19th Century mosaics. The area in the middle is the reservoir where hot water is poured.
