[custom_adv] Boris Johnson's girlfriend Carrie Symonds stood front and centre among his staff as the new Prime Minister gave his first speech in Downing Street today - but she did join her partner as he entered Number 10. [custom_adv] "You can't even accompany your loved one in the hospital. I can only imagine the agony of Carrie Symonds, his fiancee, who as we know is due to give birth in the early summer. This is a nightmare all round and also a nightmare for the whole country." [custom_adv] Boris Johnson spent the night in the intensive care unit of St Thomas' Hospital, after his coronavirus symptoms worsened and he suffered breathing difficulties. [custom_adv] Boris Johnson’s partner Carrie Symonds is pregnant and the couple have got engaged, they have announced. “The prime minister and Miss Symonds are very pleased to announce their engagement and that they are expecting a baby in the early summer,” a spokesperson for the couple said. [custom_adv] The 55-year-old tested positive for the disease 11 days ago and was admitted to hospital on Sunday night. [custom_adv] But his health deteriorated yesterday, as Downing Street said he suffered from "persistent" symptoms of COVID-19 - including a cough and a high temperature. [custom_adv] He had barely been able to see Ms Symonds since he fell ill, as she is pregnant with their first child and had also been self-isolating due to fears of having caught COVID-19. [custom_adv] 32-year-old Ms Symonds posted said on Twitter that she had spent the past week in bed with the main coronavirus symptoms. "I haven't needed to be tested and, after seven days of rest, I feel stronger and I'm on the mend," she wrote. [custom_adv] The question of how high-profile Mr Johnson's 31-year-old girlfriend would be once he became Prime Minister has been the topic of fevered speculation in Westminster in recent weeks. [custom_adv] And the former Conservative Party communications director, 31, appeared to give her answer this afternoon when she stood, wearing a bold red dress, in front of rows of cameras awaiting his return from Buckingham Palace. [custom_adv] It had been thought Miss Symonds wanted to keep a low profile around her partner's celebrations because he is not yet divorced from estranged wife Marina, with whom he has four children, and she 'did not want to overshadow his moment'. [custom_adv] It is not clear when or if she will move into Number 10. They have appeared in public together before with Carrie attending her boyfriend's campaign launch in June to show her support. [custom_adv] Last week the Mail revealed Miss Symonds had told friends she doesn't want to be 'in the limelight' when Mr Johnson fulfils his lifetime ambition of becoming PM. [custom_adv] The couple were seen leaving Mr Johnson's home in Oxfordshire on Sunday but were not photographed together. They have been together for more than a year and have been living together at her flat in Camberwell, south London. [custom_adv] Last week they completed a purchase of a three-storey £1.3million Victorian home in Camberwell and Miss Symonds was seen moving her things in with mother Josephine Mcafee. [custom_adv] The couple caused controversy amid reports they wanted to use taxpayers' funds to get new furniture for number 10, with Miss Symonds refusing to move any of hers in - although sources close to Mr Johnson have since denied the reports. [custom_adv] She was also seen trying on rings at a Notting Hill jewellers with close friend and FGM campaigner Nimco Ali earlier this month. [custom_adv] Since the 'row' she has been pictured with Boris holding hands while sitting together at a table in Sussex countryside, although they were later accused of 'staging the moment'.
