Mohammad Reza was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in 1974. As it worsened, from the spring of 1978, he stopped appearing in public, with the official explanation being that he was suffering from a “persistent cold.” In May 1978, the Shah suddenly cancelled a long planned trip to Hungary and Bulgaria and disappeared from view.
